GROUP INTRODUCTION

THE LONDON BUS GROUP
The London Bus Group is a forum for members to report news and observations, and discuss topics, which are of interest to us as London bus enthusiasts. The scope of the group is buses operating in the London Transport and former London Country area, roughly bounded by Gravesend, Crawley, Guildford, Windsor, Luton, Harlow and Tilbury. There is an overlap with other bus groups, such as 'Buses in Surrey', while other groups cover Croydon Tramlink, the London Underground and other rail systems. Anyone who is genuinely interested in London's buses is welcome to join - the membership is diverse, including a number of people working at various levels within the London bus industry, as well as many people for whom buses are purely a hobby.

GUIDELINES

In order to ensure the smooth running of the group, members are expected to follow a small number of guidelines. This list isn't exhaustive, but should give a general idea of what is, and what isn't, welcome on the group.

Please DO:

  1. ensure that your post is directly relevant to London's buses (past, present or future), and likely to be of interest to others as bus enthusiasts.

  2. ensure that your post adds something new and useful to the thread.

  3. make sure that the subject line for your post reflects its content - if you are replying to another post but the thread has developed on from its original topic, please alter the subject line to reflect this.

  4. when replying to a message please delete all irrelevant parts of the original message. Do keep the portion that relates to YOUR post so we can all "keep the thread"!

  5. ensure that your post is factual.

  6. keep any criticism of the London bus industry, or any part of it, constructive.

  7. respect the right of other members to express opinions which may differ from your own.

  8. keep language clean!

Please DON'T:

  1. make posts which aren't directly relevant to London's buses - past, present or future.

  2. post complaints about bus services, bus companies/authorities or their staff - use the proper channels (e.g. London Buses or the London Travelwatch.)

  3. post 'test' messages, virus warnings or simple 'thank you' messages to the group as a whole. By all means send 'thank you' messages off-group, directly to the individuals) concerned, if you wish to.

  4. post 'throwaway' one-liners, or other time-wasting posts which add no real value to the group.

  5. exchange 'chat' with individual members on-group.

  6. post sweeping generalisations - stick to facts.

  7. speculate, discuss rumours or make 'fantasy' posts. The 'LBFlipside' group is the place for this type of activity.

  8. use the group as a platform for any political, social, economic or other agenda.

  9. make posts to promote other groups or websites, unless you have received permission from the London Bus group management.

  10. engage in anti-social behaviour, antagonism, arguments or 'flame wars'.

  11. insist on having the last word in a discussion when others don't share a point of view you have expressed.

  12. post rants.

  13. do anything to bring the group into disrepute.

Where necessary, the group management may use moderation or, occasionally, stronger sanctions to deal with individual members whose behaviour on-group causes concern.

Please remember that we are all here to enjoy a hobby. Those of us who run the group do so in our spare time. Although we recognise that members might not always agree with us, we do expect members to co-operate with us.

If you have a grievance concerning the behaviour of another member, wish to comment on the way the group is managed, have a question over whether a particular subject is OK to post to the group or want to contact the group management for any other reason, please e-mail us at londonbusgroup-owner @ yahoogroups.com (remove the spaces!)

USEFUL INFORMATION

This section contains some things you need to know, to make best use of the group.

MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE FLOWCHART

Group owner & chief moderator
Richard Cains

Assistant Moderators
Malc McDonald, Terry Wong Min, Matt Arnold, Paul Dredge & Simon Cooper.

To email the group management, email londonbusgroup-owner @ yahoogroups.com (remove the spaces). This email address forwards the email to all those mentioned above.

NEW MEMBERS PLEASE READ HERE!

Initially your membership to the group may take up to 48 hours (a little longer at weekends), to be approved. Similarly, when you post for the first few times, your messages may be slightly delayed while they are approved by management. This is because in the past, we have had problems with spam mail on the group. This is to make sure the group remains on the topics chosen!

FILE ATTACHMENTS

Any files attached to messages posted to the group are automatically removed. If you have a file which you want to share with the group, it can be placed in the group's 'Files' section as long as you have permission from the group management. Photos should be shared on the London Bus Scene group.

I WANT TO POST MY E-MAIL ADDRESS IN MY MESSAGES?
(this means within the message text [body] and not within your normal e-mail header)

Best to put in spaces before and after the @ symbol, otherwise the group's website will blank it out.

THE GROUP WEB SITE?

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/londonbusgroup/

This lets you view lists of members, catch up on messages, current polls, events etc. and modify your subscription. The group web site is presently only open to members of LondonBusGroup.

To view the page of group rules, useful information, and server status i.e. find out what to do if Yahoo! Groups are unavailable, can be found at http://www.londonbusgroup.co.uk

THE GROUP ARCHIVES?

For the older messages pre-April 2002, visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/london-bus (no Yahoo ID or password required to read the old postings).

Messages posted between April 2002 and February 2006 were on the Smartgroups service (http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/london-bus). SmartGroups closed down on the 30th November 2006. This service is NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

I'M GOING ON HOLIDAY AND DON'T WANT 2000 MESSAGES TO READ WHEN I GET HOME....

Visit the group web site and Modify your subscription to "No email - I'll read messages on the web site." - this means you don't get each mail sent to you, but you can read them in the group web site, or change back to usual mode when you get back!

Tip: why not take the group website address, your Yahoo! ID and password with you on holiday? Then you can catch up with all the bus happenings back home from a friend's PC or from any good cyber caf.

I HAVE A COMPLAINT/ GRIEVANCE OVER ANOTHER MEMBER OR SOMETHING THEY HAVE POSTED?

E-mail management directly at londonbusgroup-owner @ yahoogroups.com (remove the spaces) and tell us what happened, why you are offended etc. DO NOT have a rant to the entire group about it!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Our service is powered by Yahoo! Groups They deal with sending out messages, unsubscribing etc. All we do is manage the group, and set the rules etc. However, we frequently get asked questions about the technical aspects of the group server. So, we include below some of the most-often-asked questions.

Do I need a Yahoo! ID to access the group?
No. You may choose an email only option, send an e-mail to londonbusgroup-owner @ yahoogroups.com (remove the spaces) to request membership.

I now want to use the full web features of the group but currently only have email access, what do I do?
See http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/groups/groups-51.html.

How do I change my e-mail address, password or other personal details in Yahoo! Groups?
Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/ and login with your Yahoo! ID and password. Select 'My Account' from the options at the top of the screen . Make any required changes following the on screen instructions.

What do you do with my personal details?
The details you input to the group webpage, and when you email us i.e. your email address etc. are handled by Yahoo! Groups which is the server which powers the LondonBusGroup. The personal details that you optionally provide when you first register with Yahoo!, (i.e. First and Last name, Geographic location, postcode, age band, gender and preferred Language), are used to make certain that any advertisements you see will be appropriate to you. Your details will not be passed on to other organizations (unless you allow it). For further details, please refer to the Yahoo! Groups Privacy Policy here: http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy/uk/

How do I unsubscribe from LondonBusGroup, but stay on all my other Yahoo! Groups?
Send a blank email from your email address to londonbusgroup-unsubscribe @ yahoogroups.com (Remove the spaces!)

How do I delete my Yahoo! account? (i.e. delete your Yahoo! ID and remove ALL services it had access to)

Visit http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/edit/edit-23.html for more information.

I am fully registered but I can't seem to login. What should I do?
First of all, you need to check that your browser is set to accept cookies. Cookies are small text files stored by your browser which help to identify you, Yahoo! Groups requires users to have their cookies enabled. If your cookie is not accepted correctly (corrupted), you will be signed out of your account when you move to another page and will not be able to re-access Yahoo! Groups. See http://help.yahoo.com/help/uk/groups/groups-33.html

I am seeing an error page - why?
If you see a 404 error: The page you are looking for has been renamed or is no longer available on the site, or the address has been mis-spelt. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/ and try to access your group and subsequently the required page within it via that route. This error is most commonly seen when a link is sent to a document in the files or photos which has since been deleted.

I have posted to a group and received a bounce message/failure notice. Why?
It could be a number of reasons... here are the "most popular"
1. You have e-mailed your group from an e-mail address that is not a member of that group or not a registered user of Yahoo! Groups.
2. You have incorrectly typed in your group name
3. You have not given your message a subject
4. You have started your message with a system command such as 'mail', 'digest', 'subscribe', or 'unsubscribe'
5. You have tried to reply to a mail which cannot be replied to i.e. the digest

I changed my e-mail address in the system, but my new address is not recognised. Why?
When you change your e-mail address or add an additional one, Yahoo! Groups then sends an e-mail to your new address. You must reply to this e-mail in order to verify your change of address. Until we receive verification, your original address remains in our system and your new one will not be recognised. The e-mail from Yahoo! Groups should arrive within a few minutes, however, there may be occasions when it takes a little longer. If you unsubscribe from the group, and re-subscribe under a new address (the "way round") please note the system, by default, will pick you up as a "new user" and therefore membership needs to be approved etc.etc.

I've forgotten my password, where can I find it?
Visit http://help.yahoo.com/help/uk/edit/edit-20.html , click the link to "Sign-in Problems page" and follow the on screen instructions.

I replied to a message via email, but it didnt appear in the correct topic. Why?
See http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/groups/email/email-12.html
